How to Prepare When You're Expecting

!±8± How to Prepare When You're Expecting

When you're expecting an addition to your household, it's a fun time. Pregnancy can be exhausting and you'll have a lot of extra things with which to cope, but you won't be as on the go as you can expect to be after your new baby arrives. This is why you must make the time to get your residence prepared for its new occupant. With careful preparation, you can make things much easier for yourself later.

Preparing the nursery for the new baby isn't the only thing to do. You may need to deal with the entire layout of your home. Although it seems like a long way off now, your baby will be crawling before you know it. This means getting your home as baby-proofed as possible. Fire guards are a necessary part of getting your home ready. A fire guard should be installed in front of each fireplace. Any cupboards that contain medicines, cleaning products or any other harmful materials should have locks installed. Take an in-depth look at all of your furniture as well. Can your furniture be pulled over onto a small child? Be sure to look at the television stand, entertainment center, china cabinets and bookshelves. Next, get rid on any items that are small enough to put into the baby's mouth or make sure they are at least three feet about the floor, as these items can become choking hazards. Additionally, consider moving all of your electronics higher up and out of reach as well. It is also a good idea to make sure that all cords are out of sight and clipped to the wall, if at all possible.

If your residence has radiators that get scorching, block them off so that your baby can't reach them. Avoid having rugs on slick surfaces where they could cause accidents. When you're done with those jobs, give your entire residence a thorough cleaning. Your baby won't just put things in her mouth; she will most likely have her face on the furniture and the floor, so you'll want to reduce the associated risks.

Getting the Nursery Ready

Even if you are determined to keep your baby in your bedroom for the initial months of her life, it's worth taking the time to get her own space ready. Older children don't appreciate having to share their space with a baby and put up with an infant's crying, so it's best if you can provide the baby her own space. Customarily, parents have decorated babies' rooms in pastel colors, but more recently, research has shown that strong contrasts can help the development of babies' eyes and visual processing. Geometric shapes can help with mental development and images of friendly looking faces, human or animal, can help a baby feel more secure. So, you may want to keep these things in mind as you decorate the baby's room.

It's good to make sure that your baby's room is lighted well, but darkness is also important to developing eyes. For this reason, you may want to steer clear of decorations, such as stars, during the first few months of her life.

Things You'll Most Likely Need

Gifts for the baby are normally clothes and toys, but there are many other things you'll need to look after your new child properly, including things for your home. As well as a suitable cot, the baby's bedroom should contain a dresser for storing clothing, a toy chest or similar container for toys and a cozy chair for you to sit in as you hold or talk to your child. It's good to have a raised surface to change the baby if you're having trouble bending down (a common problem after giving birth) as well as somewhere to keep the changing and cleaning materials.

Getting ready for the new arrival while you're pregnant will ease a lot of stress when the baby does arrive. It's also a great way to get even more energized about the coming arrival!
